"The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress...and the opposite of fight or flight."
Coined by Dr. Herbert Benson, professor, author, cardiologist, and founder of Harvard's Mind/Body Medical Institute.
Reiki is a form of energy healing that targets the energy fields around the body. It has been around for THOUSANDS of years. The current form of Reiki was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, who reportedly taught 2,000 people the Reiki method during his lifetime. The practice spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe in the 1980s.
Energy can become stagnant in the body, especially where there has been physical injury or even possibly emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness. Energy healing aims to help the flow of energy and remove blocks in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure. Improving the flow of energy around the body can enable relaxation, reduce pain, speed the healing process, and reduce other symptoms of illness. Reiki aids in relaxation, assists the body’s natural healing processes, and helps to develop emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. It also induces deep relaxation, helps people cope with difficulties, and relieves emotional stress to improve overall well-being.
The healing effects are mediated by channeling the universal energy known as qi, pronounced “chi.” In India, this is known as “prana.” This is the same energy involved in Tai Chi. It is the life force energy that surrounds all of us. This energy permeates the whole body. While this energy is not measurable by modern scientific techniques, it can be felt by those who are attuned to it.
"Here is the great space that surrounds us - the Universe. There is endless and enormous energy. It is universal...its ultimate source is the Creator...it can stem from the sun, or moon or stars...it is a limitless force. It is the source of energy that makes the plants grow...the birds fly. When a human being has pain, problems, he or she can draw from it. It is an ethereal source, a wave length of great power which can revitalize, restore harmony."
